A question from Rod McKuen

Dear Frank Bruni,
I started your book last night and I just wanted you to know how hard it's been for me to lay it aside for a while in order to get some work done. And, I find I don't want it to end so I intend to ration my reading from here on in. Talk about a great meal, Born Round is really it.

I find what you don't say as moving as the words you've parted with. Congratulations on a really wonderful autobiography. It's warm, witty and always to the point. What a good and important writer you are. I feel I know your family, your lovers and even you a little bit – even though I suspect you're not that easy to get a handle on. I honestly can't remember when I've been so moved, so often by any story. I don't mean to gush but it's hard not too. With the passing of so many writer friends I admire and haven't kept in touch with as much as I should have over the years (Larry Gelbhart and now Bill Safire come to mind) I’m determined to take a moment to let even talent I'm just discovering know how much I appreciate their work.
Thanks FB. The older I get the more I feel that any day I discover a new voice or a unique way of thinking the more I appreciate this fleeting and sometimes staid life. Just thought you ought to know about your contribution.
A new fan,
Rod McKuen

Answer:

Your words are so incredibly kind and so incredibly flattering I feel like something of a praise glutton even posting them. But they make me feel great, and I thank you for them. I hoped the book would both touch and amuse people, and whenever I find out it has, I'm satisfied and pleased. So: thank you, again. Very much.
