A question from Michele

Were you able to keep up an exercise regimen even at your heaviest? I find exercise difficult because I can't do much before I'm completely winded and then my feet and joints hurt the next day. Were there particular types of exercise you found most endurable when you were way out of shape?

Answer:

The starting of exercise is indeed the hard part, because it's easier to do the fitter you are. When I got up to 270 pounds, and then worked my way back, I started with very long walks, often uphill, and then built in short runs. But, yes, it had to be gradual. Have you tried swimming? It's easiest on the joints and one exercise that heaviness doesn't make difficult in the same way that heaviness, say, makes running or even walking difficult. Swimming could be a great idea in this case.
